  • Job Description

    Purpose:

     

    This position provides scientific and operational leadership for the Manufacturing, Process Development, and Facilities groups. As such, this position is responsible for overall operational strategy for all three departments to ensure continuious improvement for safe operations and attainment of financial and strategic goals. Translates strategy into tactics, priorities and resource requirements for execution of plan to assure successful implementatation and ultimate success. A focus on overall team development is imperative for success in this position.

     

    This position maintains contact with counterparts at the parent company to ensure project teams are working towards common goals. This position is an integral part of the senior management team at PBI which provides overall direction and guidance for the company.

     

     

    Mandatory Qualifications:

     

    • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
    • Previous senior level Operations experience with a minimum of 15 years management experience in organic chemical manufacturing, new product development or facility operations.
    • Has a demonstrated record of achievement in managing Operations in complex environments.
      • Experience with automated chemistry processes with ability to implement process improvements and cost reduction.
      • Proven ability to achieve positive financial results in applying technology to product development.
    • Broad expertise in synthetic methods and knowledge of modern instrumentation and technology for synthesis and chemical processing.
    • Experience with QSR (Quality Systems Regulations) .
    • Experience with Statistical Process Control and statistical quality.
    • Demonstrated strong safety record, using a collaborative approach to implement and enforce safety programs.
    • Experience and understanding of safety and environmental regulations in a hazardous materials environment.
    • Demonstrated experience in applying Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma tools and methodologies within a manufacturing environment to yield improvements in cost, quality, and delivery. Black belt certification preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage and successfully accomplish multiple complex projects simultaneously.
    • Management experience should include directing a facilities department.
      • Preferred experience in engineering related facilities management projects.
      • Demonstrated knowledge of most building mechanical systems.
      • Experience with space planning, remodeling and/or new construction projects.
    • Experience in filling and packaging of chemical substrates.
    • Must possess solid computer skills including ERP systems (SAP), documentation systems, and Microsoft Suite.
    • APICS certification preferred.

    • Can negotiate skillfully in tough situations with both internal and external groups, in a direct yet diplomatic way, gaining the trust and buy-in of other parties.

     

    Essential Responsibilities:

     

    1. Drive continuous improvement strategies to solve problems, improve safety, increase yields, assure resources, or otherwise meet operational goals.
    2. Evaluate overall COGS and identify annual improvement opportunities.
    3. Assist in the planning of discovery and development activities directed to new compounds and new processes with a goal of moving these into cost-effective manufacturing.
    4. Work collaboratively with other departments, managers and staff, both at Promega Biosciences and Promega Madison to ensure the successful commercialization of the technology developed under the R&D programs.
    5. Provide guidance for the ongoing support of the physical plant including building systems and equipment, surrounding grounds and handling of post-manufacturing waste streams.
    6. Provide collaborative support and guidance to the Research and Quality Control departments in the manufacture of Promega Biosciences’ products.
    7. Develop and manage budgets for each area of supervision and assist with business plans for the company.
    8. Provide leadership to ensure the operation of the Manufacturing, Process Development, and Facilities departments is in compliance with all appropriate safety and environmental regulations.
    9. Provide developmental opportunities for existing personnel and justify additional resources as required.
    10. Keep informed and abreast of scientific and technical literature in the areas of interest to the company.
    11. Assist in the smooth transfer of information within a department, between departments, and between PBI and Promega.
    12. Understand and comply with all elements of the PBI quality system appropriate for this position including writing or reviewing and approving all documentation related to the areas under supervision.

    13. All employees must complete assigned duties in a safe manner, thoroughly familiarizing themselves with safety concerns, such as reading safety data sheets, wearing necessary protective clothing, including safety glasses, chemical resistant gloves, respirators, etc. All employees are required to attend regularly scheduled safety meetings. Responsible for monitoring safety practices of assigned area.

     

     

    Physical Demands:

     

    Must be able to move about the facility working with staff at their workstations. Requires the ability to climb stairs and ladders.  Requires corrected vision for near (within 20cm) and far (greater than 20 cm) sight.  Must be able to wear PPE such as safety glasses and specialty footwear as required.  Regular travel is required to the corporate headquarters, professional meetings and conferences as well as to customers.

     

    Work Environment:

     

    The primary work areas are the offices, labs, and manufacturing areas located throughout the building. Because all processes are conducted according to safety and environmental procedures, exposures will be minimal and below OSHA permissible levels as published in the chemical safety data sheet. Proper protection (i.e. fume hoods and PPE) will be required and provided. Exposure to cold, freezing, sub-freezing temperatures, high temperatures or noise from equipment may occur.
